Alcoholism Is Proving to Be More Dangerous Than We Thought

We have all heard, read and most seen the short term problems associated with alcoholism, but recent studies have proven that alcoholism also has some very serious long term side effects as well. The results of these new studies might be shocking to some people, but people who have recovered from years of alcohol abuse may have already been through some of these problems.

Alcoholism Shortens Your Life

Perhaps the most alarming find that has come from these new studies is the fact that alcoholism can and will shorten a person’s life. On average, alcoholism has been known to shave just over seven years off of a person’s life. Living a long healthy life and alcohol just don’t mix. It is not surprising considering the physical damage that alcoholism does to the human body.

Alcoholism Causes Other Physical Problems

These recent studies have also helped scientists understand that alcoholism causes plenty of other very dangers illnesses that are detrimental to the human body. Important body functions controlled by the liver, airways, pancreas, nervous system and gastrointestinal tract are adversely affected by alcoholism. Cataracts, heart attacks and cardiovascular disease are more frequent in people who suffer from alcoholism.

The Tests were conducted over a 12 year period where over 23,000 people with alcohol dependence were compared to over 200,000 people without alcohol dependence. While the tests were being conducted, approximately 1 out of 5 people who exhibited alcohol dependence died. Only 1 in 12 patients who did not show alcohol dependence died.
